Kip Tiernan Died at 85. I met her once--a thoroughly charming woman, at a 70th birthday party I helped organize for the late poet Jack Powers (Founder of Stone Soup Poets) with Sidewalk Sam and others. Here is a picture:

Kip Tiernan, who founded Rosie’s Place, the nation’s first shelter for homeless women, and whose persistent, raspy voice echoed from the streets to the State House as she advocated for the poor, died of cancer Saturday in her South End apartment.

Kip was a rarity and a wonderful woman. I met her twice at Mary and Mark's. She did so much for homeless women and helped them back on their feet. Rosie's Place did not take any money from the government. My friend Mare and I attended a fashion show recently to benefit Rosie's Place. Being a Social Worker, I cannot even begin to tell you how important this place is. There should be more people like Kip in this world of ours. It sure would be a much better place.
