I ran into Louisa Solano, the owner of the "Grolier Poetry Book Shop,"in Harvard Square. She is recovering from her physical problems and will be at the Grolier on a limited basis and by appointment. She plans to continue running the shop, and will hold her afternoon teas on Saturday afternoon at 5PM at the shop. Please patronize her store and support a valuable institution!

I am so sorry to hear that Louisa has not been well!

I don't know if you would know the answer to this, but I am a little concerned about what will happen to the Grolier if Louisa is no longer able to manage it, or if their financial problems become too much. I know her health is fragile and that money has been a grave issue. Is anyone else involved in running the bookstore? Does she have a long term plan for it?

Maybe it is time for other people to get involved?

  2. Louisa is recovering and is back at the store at a limited basis one of the best ways to help her is to buy books at the store for now...

Which I will certainly do. Yikes, and pronto.

What happened?? Is it serious? Does she have anyone helping her? This makes me really nervous. I cried when Wordsworth closed, and I don't want to lose the Grolier. I walked by today and just felt very sad to see it closed up.

    Thanks for posting about this.

  4. I ran into her on Mass Ave. in Harvard Square. She's doing OK. The store is in bad financial shape, but she is back on her feet (not fully) and has Teas on Saturday afternoon at the shop at 4:30PM

I'll never forget bringing City of Poets to Grolier to see if Louisa would sell some for us. I nearly lost my liver when she insisted on reading my poems then and there. Then I nearly floated home after she expressed appreciation and agreed to carry some books for sale. Maybe I never got paid, but I sure was encouraged. I can't imagine that the charm of Grolier will be quite the same under a new owner. I hope there will still be great readings at Adams House.
